Glen Campbell won the 2015 Grammy award for Best Country Song for his final ballad, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” His wife attended the pre-telecast portion and accepted the award on his behalf, as Campbell was unable to attend. The legendary singer-songwriter has been battling Alzheimer’s disease for years, and has reached the sixth stage of the disease (“severe cognitive decline”) — he requires 24-hour care.
It has been nearly two years since Campbell has performed in public, but as a farewell to his music career, Campbell’s record label released “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” as a grand finale for his recording career. The melody is somber and contemplative, yet the lyrics show Campbell’s ability to find a self-deprecating irony in his disease. The result is a beautiful combination of sadness and joy, which ends much too quickly.
