We Watched This Christmas Special Every Year & This Scene Always Made Me Cry.

When you think about classic Christmas specials, what comes to mind? If you’re like me, there are a few that stand out above the rest: A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, and Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol. Growing up in the ’60s, we would watch these programs every year. Tuning in to these festive features became a tradition of sorts; and while the first two are definitely well-known and still very much a part of our culture, Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol is the one that will always hold a special place in my memory.

If you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Magoo, he was a popular cartoon character created in 1949 by UPA. Voiced by Jim Backus, Quincy Magoo was a wealthy retiree who would constantly find himself in comical situations as a result of his nearsightedness. Through sheer luck and denial, however, Magoo would always make it out on top. In 1962, NBC aired the holiday special telling Charles Dickens’ famous story with Magoo as Ebenezer Scrooge. The entire program is memorable, but one scene in particular always brought a tear to my eye (and still does). When Scrooge travels back in time to see the younger version of himself on Christmas all alone, he sings a song that will break your heart. Watch the scene below, and make sure you have a tissue nearby!
