It shouldn’t come as a shock that we’re big fans of old recipes; so you know we were excited to come across this latest installment from Jas. Townsend and Son, Inc. From the same people who brought us fried chicken from 1736 and doughnuts from 1805 comes a fantastic recipe for ice cream that dates back to 1836! Specifically, the recipe is for “Parmesan Iced Cream,” which has more of a savory flavor and involves some interesting ingredients you wouldn’t normally find in ice cream, such as parmesan cheese and a homemade syrup made of sugar and water. The use of parmesan is understandable, given that it’s a heavily-salted cheese that lasted quite long. After cooking the ice cream (which is essentially a custard), you make it the same way many of us probably made ice cream at home or in our classes at school.
